The Oriel 2 side table features a blackened solid white oak base which has been burned in the traditional Japanese shou sugi ban technique. This technique when used on oak reveals the deep richness of the open grain and creates a unique black quality which is heightened by the hand rubbed oil finish. The cantilevered top and waterfall joined leg in highly figured elm complete the structure. The unique elm plank has been cerused to further highlight the grain that flows from top to leg. The heightened contrast is created both in color and in form. The mass of the black leg frame serves as a perfect balance to the the cerused and cantilevered top. The overall effect is a highly sculptural table that is ultimately very functional. Each element is selected, shaped, joined and finished so as to create a unified design.
